Ellen Larmer honored for her extraordinary service to the Bethlehem community
Women of Excellence Bethlehem hosted their first Christmas Gala & Awards Ceremony on December 22, 2012 at the Blue Grillhouse and Event Center in Bethlehem. The holiday occasion was organized by Enid Jackson, president of Women of Excellence Bethlehem and friend of Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem. She is a current volunteer with CADCB’s Southside Vision 2014 neighborhood revitalization program, and a previous participant of the CADCB’s Start Your Business program. Enid created Women of Excellence Bethlehem a few years ago. It is a non-profit corporation that provides support services for women and their families in the Bethlehem area.
The Holiday Gala was a beautiful evening filled with festive decorations, great food, entertainment, a silent auction, and dancing. Five individuals were honored for their extraordinary service to the Bethlehem community: Honorable John Callahan, Mayor of Bethlehem; Mike Albarell, owner of Albarell Electric; Ellen Larmer, director of Community Action Development Corporation of Bethlehem; and Curtissa Odi, director of S.T.A.R. Academy, and her husband Henry Odi, Vice Provost for Academic Diversity at Lehigh University.
Ellen was recognized for her passion, determination and success in revitalizing south Bethlehem and making it a brighter place to live and work. Ellen spends numerous hours guiding entrepreneurs through the process of opening small businesses. Additionally, Ellen has managed the community development projects of Southside Vision 2014, including initiatives to expand open space, creating safer and more affordable housing, building youth recreational opportunities, developing the Four Blocks International Neighborhood as a viable commercial corridor, and empowering community residents to help plan their revitalization efforts, including streetscape and gateway improvements.
This award is a huge honor not only for Ellen, but for Southside Vision 2014 members who helped these efforts at CADCB. We are proud of our successes, and for helping others to develop businesses and organizations that create positive social and economic change in south Bethlehem.
