SOUTHSIDE CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
The South Side Children’s Festival is an after-school arts educational program designed to build school community through the arts. We look forward to expanding this year’s program to involve ten regional arts groups in eleven urban schools. Four of these schools are in south Bethlehem and three others reach children who are from the Southside, but go to schools such as Marvine and Freemansburg on Bethlehem’s Northside. In total, we expect to offer eleven workshop programs in our schools, which will culminate in 1) a peer group assembly 2) an after-school community assembly and 3) PTO and community events whenever possible. Also new for the coming year is an increasing focus on middle school students and our involvement in the United Way’s Summer Slide program during the months of June and July.
All programs are designed to address the real cultural and social needs of the students. Programs include projects based on occupations, diversity awareness and citizenship. By addressing these themes through a wide variety of art forms, we create as many performance opportunities as possible (up to 30 for 2018-2019). Our performances are intended to provide an attractive force for bringing families into the schools for rich and sustainable interactions between school and community.
